Human Doings to Human Beings

In our world today, there is so much information coming at us 24/7 that it can sometimes become overwhelming.  There are the lists upon lists of things to do for our home life, work life and community life.  It is easy for me to sometimes, get caught up in the hurry of it all, get this done, rush off to do that, add 16 more things to my already full list.  There are times that my list continues to grow even though I have been busy all day with ‘tasks’ and instead of feeling accomplished at the end of the day, I am more overwhelmed than when I started the day.  DO this.  DO that. This cycle happens in life.  But it is meant to be a short cycle, not a lifestyle.

There is another way, and even I forget this sometimes when I am in the midst of doing.

We are human beings.  Our souls are designed to be in the moment, appreciate what is happening around us, reflect on the message and allow the next step to happen.  For me this means, watching the sunrise each morning, going for a morning walk, taking 20 minutes in the morning to do some yoga, I intentionally turn off all the household electronics 30 minutes before my bedtime, I write down my 3 gratitude’s for the blessings from the day.   When I am consistent with one or more of my self-care ‘being’ actions, everything else flows easier and I am able to be more resilient in my day.

My coaching today is to ask you to take 5 – 10 minutes a day to shift your mindset from ‘doing’ to ‘being’. These short exercises help to reset your adrenal system and allow for calmness to be the cornerstone of your day.

  • Wake up 10 minutes earlier and enjoy your quiet time.
  • Mindfulness – when you are brushing your teeth in the morning, just think about brushing your teeth, not your to-do list or what did not get done yesterday, just be present in the moment for 2 minutes per day.
  • Breath in for the count of 4. Hold for the count of 4. Exhale for the count of 4.  Do this 8 times.
  • Connect to nature by going for a 10-minute walk (this can be 2 five-minute walks).
  • Go outside for 10 minutes, sit and quiet your mind.  Don’t intentionally listen for anything.
  • At the end of the day, write down 3 things that you are grateful for from this day.
